Sperm Collection

Simultaneously, sperm is collected from the male partner or a donor. The sperm sample undergoes a washing process to separate healthy sperm from seminal fluid, ensuring only the best sperm are used for fertilization.

Fertilization

In the laboratory, the eggs and sperm are combined. If sperm quality is a concern, a technique called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be employed, where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. The fertilized eggs, now embryos, are cultured for several days, typically 3 to 5, to monitor their development.

Embryo Transfer

After culturing, the healthiest embryos are selected for transfer into the woman’s uterus. This is a relatively simple procedure where embryos are placed into the uterine cavity using a thin catheter. The number of embryos transferred depends on various factors, including the woman’s age and embryo quality.

Pregnancy Test

About 10 to 14 days post-transfer, a blood test is conducted to determine if implantation has occurred, indicating a successful pregnancy. If the test is positive, further monitoring and ultrasounds are scheduled to confirm the pregnancy’s progression.

Follow-Up Care

Regardless of the outcome, follow-up appointments are essential to monitor the woman’s health and address any concerns. In the case of a successful pregnancy, prenatal care begins to ensure the well-being of both mother and baby.
